The scontrol show syntax is not the same as update, create, delete.  This is sort of a headache when you are trying to remember commands to use.  The syntax should be the same.  Namely you do:

scontrol show job blah

and

scontrol update jobid=blah stuff

It would be better if it was:

scontrol show jobid=blah

It looks like this functionality has existed since 2009. Here is the commit:
